PAST PROJECTS
THE KLAMATH BASIN
A Day in The Life of the Klamath ~
Adopted by the Full Council, and in collaboration with the Klamath Basin Ecosystem Foundation and the Klamath Watershed Institute, this project will seek funds to involve various agricultural groups, public schools, and stakeholders in several pictorial workshops and displays. ORE-CAL RC&D will act as a funding support organization for a variety of grants needed to complete this project.
Klamath Watershed-An American Success Story ~
A six- episode TV series documentary of the Klamath Basin as an American Success Story was developed as an educational tool to be aired nationwide. The Klamath Basin history and life style has been told through actual stories of the local community members.
Consensus Building ~
Working together to restore the river and to keep local communities alive and sustainable through a series of consensus building workshops, attended by the Klamath Basin Stakeholders. ORE-CAL partnered with multi-agencies and organizations to sponsor The Klamath Basin Conference in Redding, CA. where a “One Voice” restoration funding package was developed and delivered to our legislators.
ORE-CAL staff provides facilitation services to the Klamath Basin communities to resolve issues and build consensus of a long-term plan and vision.
ORE-CAL Council completed the Klamath Basin Adaptive Management Plan, providing direction and creating goals for the community.
Ag Plastic Recovery Program ~
- ORE-CAL RC&D leads the way in resolving the problem of waste agricultural plastic and combines that solution with addressing the problem of juniper invasion, contributing to the erosion and the unproductively of rangeland.
- Consultants completed an economic cash flow analysis to help determine potential costs of production of alternative fuel cubes. Independent economist helped complete cash flow analysis and pre-business plan calculations.
- A refine production cost and draft business plan is being developed for potential fuel cube buyers to determine interest in collaboration on emissions testing.
- An emissions test plan completed the study and provided viable information needed to proceed in future projects.
·-A business plan identified the margin of profit as related to the plastic market and the breakeven point that can be withstood to support a reliable supply of plastic film to the cubing plant.
Conservation Security Program ~
· Seven workshops were presented by ORE-CAL and NRCS staff in Lake and Harney Counties to help local Ranchers evaluate their eligibility for Conservation Security Program (CSP) funding in the Warner Lake Watershed. ORE-CAL staff was responsible for the facilitation and organization of these NRCS information and self-assessment workshops.
· Staff provided contract services including public meeting planning and set up, facilitation, and program materials in support of the Upper Klamath Watershed Conservation Security program. Services were contracted through NRCS in Oregon and staff worked closely with local NRCS staff in planning, facilitating and supplying materials for meeting participants at six local meetings.
Bill Scholtes Klamath Sportsman Park Acquisition ~
· ORE-CAL assisted Klamath County and the Bill Scholtes Klamath Sportsman Park (BSKSP) in completing a state-funded Local Government Grant program application for $375,000. Staff also assisted the BSKSP board in establishing a funding strategy that will involve applying for Federal Land and Water Conservation Funds in 2009 along with help in a local funding campaign. A total of $750,000 will be needed to purchase the property.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Dorris Community Gardeners ~
· Local volunteers (FFA and Home Schooled group) helped to clean up the Dorris Community Garden Plot. A professional green house was received from the California Association of RC&D in an effort to outreach to the underserved community. The group plans to develop a plot with a goal to produce product for Farmer’s Market.
Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway & All American Road ~
· Senator Barbara Boxer’s office announced the award of almost $500,000 in four grants to promote the VLAAR. ORE-CAL RC&D in collaboration with Siskiyou County and the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway Partnership have drafted an agreement that will provide project management for the ten orientation stations that were awarded $319,000 of these funds. US Department of Transportation has approved flexible match funding for the byway projects.
Dorris Rifle Range ~
· Adopted by Full Council, this project seeks funding and technical assistance in planning and development of the old, privately owned rifle range in Dorris. The Dorris Lions Club members are in the process of obtaining ownership and plan to develop the rifle range into a safe and functional multi-purpose community park.
Dorris Centennial Celebration Project ~
· Adopted by the Full Council, this project assisted the Dorris Lions Club and the community of Dorris to plan and seek funds to commemorate the Dorris Centennial Celebration. Local artist, Ralph Starritt, was commissioned to create a commemorative statue and historical depiction of Dorris over the past 100 years.
· Application for TE funds has been made to finance the landscape and beautification project
Dorris Volunteer FD Vehicle Acquisition ~
· ORE-CAL Staff completed and submitted a $295,000 grant application to Department of Homeland Security to purchase a Typhoon Pumper on behalf of Dorris Volunteer Fire Department.
Scott Valley Biomass Gasifier Demonstration Project
· The Scott Valley Biomass Gasifier Demonstration is an ideal project targeting hazardous fuel reduction on the national forest system land. The project demonstrates the economic viability and sustainability of the biomass gasifier system for combined heat and power that benefits communities and entrepreneurs
· The pre-application was one of the two approved in California. Ore-Cal RC&D has submitted a $250,000 grant application to the Woody Biomass Utilization program to fund the installation of a biomass gasifier heating system.
· Staff, Siskiyou County Supervisors, and Etna school officials took a tour of the Darby, Montana facility as a Fuels for Schools demonstration
Happy Camp Fire & Ambulance Building~
· Ore-Cal staff has been working with a newly formed Community Collaboration Group in Happy Camp to secure property and fund community based buildings for benefit of economic development in the rural location. CDBG funds for a feasibility study have been secured.
